🌱 The Typha Processing Project – Costa Rica - 2024
Why This Project Matters
Palo Verde National Park in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is one of Central America’s most vital wetland ecosystems, home to countless migratory birds and aquatic species. Yet its delicate balance is threatened by the invasive grass Typha domingensis. The Bagaces Women Group, made up of local women and families from the Bagatzi community, began harvesting Typha to create paper and other sustainable products.
The initiative not only protects biodiversity but also generates income for local families. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and breakdown of essential processing machinery stalled the project, putting both livelihoods and the ecosystem at risk.
The Challenge
Without functioning equipment, the community cannot process Typha into marketable goods. The invasive grass continues to disrupt the wetland’s natural hydrology, while families lose opportunities for sustainable income. The project needs renewed support to restore operations and ensure long-term viability.
Proposed Solution
Repair and optimize the Typha processing machine to restore full production.
Collaborate with Palo Verde National Park and the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC).
Train and involve local youth to secure generational knowledge transfer and innovation.
Provide educational workshops on gender, business, self-esteem, recycling, and waste management.
Impact
Restores livelihoods for the Bagaces Women Group, directly strengthening 250 local people’s economic and environmental health.
Protects biodiversity by controlling Typha’s spread in one of Central America’s most important wetland ecosystems.
Empowers women and youth with practical skills and leadership opportunities.
Promotes environmental sustainability through recycling and waste management initiatives.
