🍽️ El Comedor Project Rehabilitation – Nicaragua - 2023
Why This Project Matters
For hundreds of children living near La Chureca — one of the largest dumps in Managua — hunger is part of daily life. Families survive by collecting recyclables and food scraps from the landfill, often living in shelters built from plastic, scrap metal, or wood found in the garbage. Most children eat just once a day, their only meal provided at El Comedor dining hall.
The Challenge
Although El Comedor provides a lifeline, the facility itself had fallen into disrepair. Cooking for 220 children and supporting 200 families required constant use of electricity, gas, and wood, driving up costs and straining limited resources. Without rehabilitation, the dining hall risked losing its ability to provide consistent meals and support programs.
Proposed Solution
Repair and rehabilitate the El Comedor community dining hall.
Ensure the space is safe, functional, and welcoming for children and families.
Support daily cooking efforts by mothers who volunteer their time.
Maintain a reliable hub for food, education, and community programs.
Impact
220 primary school students (ages 5–13) receive a hot daily meal.
Around 200 families benefit from food support, training, and workshops.
Children gain improved nutrition, supporting their ability to learn and grow.
The rehabilitated dining hall provides a safe, welcoming space for education and community building.
With a modest budget of $1,500 USD, the project delivered significant improvements to quality of life.
