🌞 San Vicente Centre – Solar Water Heater - 2024
Why This Project Matters
At the San Vicente Centre, a remote orphanage, 89 children and young adults face severe challenges caused by limited access to water. The centre receives water only once a day, forcing them to purchase additional supplies at a high cost of $38.52 USD per 10,000 litres. Their minimum monthly requirement of 100,000 litres places a heavy financial burden on already scarce resources.
As funds are diverted to pay for water and gas, the health and safety of the children suffer. Many experience diarrheal diseases, eye infections, and other preventable health issues linked to the lack of reliable clean water and hot water for hygiene.
The Challenge
The centre spends a significant portion of its limited budget on gas for heating and cooking. Outdated lighting in dormitories adds further costs while creating poor living conditions for the most vulnerable children. Without intervention, the cycle of poor health and financial strain will continue.
Proposed Solution
Install a solar water heating system to provide reliable hot water and reduce dependency on costly gas.
Upgrade lighting in two main dormitories to improve comfort and cut electricity expenses.
Free up resources that can be redirected to food, education, and healthcare for the children.
Impact
89 children and young adults will benefit from consistent hot water, improved hygiene, and reduced illness.
Lower energy costs free funds for essential needs like nutrition and medical care.
Brighter, safer dormitories create a more nurturing environment for the most vulnerable residents.
A sustainable system reduces long-term reliance on expensive gas and electricity.
