🌞 Hogar CNF – Solar Water Heater - 2024

Why This Project Matters

Hogar CNF, managed by a legally registered civil association, has been a partner of Winds of Change since 2008. The centre provides permanent care for 50 children and youth (ages 8 months to 16 years) while also serving daily meals to 75 impoverished local children — supporting a total of 125 vulnerable individuals.

Despite its noble mission, CNF faces a severe water crisis. For the past three years, running water has been scarce, and in recent months the situation has worsened to only a trickle once per day. To meet their needs, CNF must purchase water — a costly burden that leaves little left for heating and basic operations.

The Challenge

  • CNF requires 140,000 litres of water per month, but currently receives only 70,000 litres.

  • Purchased water costs $539.28 USD per month, straining limited resources.

  • Gas for heating water costs an additional $526 USD per month, leaving the children without daily hot showers.

  • The lack of hot water and hygiene has led to increased illness (diarrheal diseases, eye infections) and lowered self-esteem for children who feel stigmatized at school.

Proposed Solution

  • Install a solar water heating system to eliminate reliance on costly gas and ensure children have access to daily hot showers.

  • Redirect saved funds to purchase sufficient water to meet the orphanage’s full monthly needs.

  • As a secondary goal, implement a photovoltaic system to power the electric water pump, ensuring continuous access to stored water while reducing electricity costs.

Impact

  • 125 children and youth will directly benefit from daily access to hot water and improved hygiene.

  • Significant reduction in illness, with improved health, confidence, and school attendance.

  • Increased resources to sustain free daily meals for impoverished children in the surrounding community.

  • A more sustainable, long-term operating model for CNF, easing the burden on the nuns and local priest who manage the centre.

Donor Thanks

Your generosity makes it possible for CNF’s children to live with dignity, health, and hope. By funding this project, donors ensure that every child has access to clean water, hot showers, and the confidence to thrive at home and in school. Thank you for helping us sustain this vital community.
