🇬🇹 Guatemala – Improving Care for Indigenous Children with Cancer
Why This Project Matters
Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality among children in Guatemala, with nearly 50% of diagnosed children not surviving. Many families travel hundreds of miles for six to eight weeks of treatment, while shelters operate with minimal resources. High electricity bills limit the ability to provide nutritious meals and proper care, and caregivers often fall sick without access to hot water.
The Challenge
Heating water is the largest energy expense. Without hot water, caregivers struggle with hygiene, their health declines, and early morning hospital visits become even harder. High utility costs prevent funds from being directed toward food and essential healthcare.
Proposed Solution
Install a solar water heating system to significantly reduce electricity bills.
Redirect saved funds to food, healthcare, and improved shelter conditions.
Provide hot water for caregivers and children, ensuring dignity and better hygiene.
Impact
92 direct beneficiaries, including Indigenous children with cancer and their caregivers.
Improved health and dignity through access to hot water.
A healthier environment for children receiving long-term treatment.
Reduced suffering for vulnerable families.
Past Support
Thanks to donor support, 44 children already benefited from mattresses, teddy bears, caps, and balloons — small comforts that brought dignity, warmth, and joy to their daily lives. “Sib’alaj maltyox” — Thank you.
