☀️ The Solar PV Project – Costa Rica (2019–2022)
Why This Project Matters
For 75 years, the Indigenous community of Cerro Azul lived without electricity in the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest. Home to around 200 people, this remote settlement faced extreme poverty, limited access to modern amenities, and few educational opportunities. Children as young as five walked hours each day to school, only to find themselves unable to keep pace with modern education and technology. Older students struggled even more when transitioning to urban schools, where digital literacy was required.
The Challenge
The absence of electricity left Cerro Azul isolated from modern education, communication, and health opportunities. Classrooms had no lighting, no computers, and no connectivity, putting an entire generation at a severe disadvantage.
Proposed Solution
Partner with RJI to design and install a solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the community’s school and center.
Provide enough energy for classroom needs, including computers, projectors, lighting, and internet access.
Equip the center with a refrigerator to store food and offer new opportunities for income (such as making frozen treats).
Impact
Installation of a 10 kW Solar PV system in November 2022.
First-ever electricity for Cerro Azul’s classrooms, enabling satellite internet, technology-based learning, and evening activities.
Enhanced food storage and nutrition options with refrigeration.
Improved quality of life and dignity for 200 community members.
A sustainable, renewable energy solution that will continue serving generations of students.
Donor Thanks
This project was made possible through the generosity of the Compassionate Eye Foundation and private donors. Your support brought light, power, and connection to a community that had lived in darkness for three generations.
